Application of psychological principles to human problems has acquired new dimension with the growing of challenges that world faces today. Accepting this challenge Jyothidarsana Counseling Centre has started to provide scientific discipline of applied psychology education and related counseling services.
Jyothidarsana Institute for Counseling & Mental health was started by CMI congregation at Thodupuzha, Kerala, India on November 28, 1993. In order to expand the services of Jyothidarsana, land was purchased at Pulluvazhy, Perumbavoor, for the new campus. On December 8, 2007 the foundation station stone was laid for the new building and the construction was started. The new campus of Jyothidarsana was inaugurated on April 12, 2012.
Jyothidarsana Counseling Centre, Pulluvazhy, Perumbavoor is a brain child of Fr. Jose Mappilamattel, CMI, who is also the founder director of the institution. The institution is presently working under the leadership of Fr. Abhilash Pathippallil, CMI as Rev. Fr. Paul Parakkattel, CMI as patron and Fr. Jose Mappilamattel CMI as chief advisor.
The institution started as a unique project of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a great visionary and social reformer of India. Taking note of that there is a scarcity of a well-equipped couselling centre and trained counselors in Kerala, Jyothidarsana started at Thodupuzha, Idukki district in Kerala on November 28, 1993. As the facility can’t meet the requirement the institution moved to Pulluvazhy, Perumbavoor in Ernkulam District in 2008 and construction of the new campus started.
The new campus of Jyothidarsana blessed by Mar Sebastian Edayanthrath Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese and inaugurated by Shri P.J Joseph, water resource minister on 12th April 2012. Fr. Sijan Oonnukallel, CMI (Provincial) and Rev. Fr. Joseph Karumathy (Vicar Pulluvazhy) were present on the ceremony.
The new spacious campus includes a Chapel, well-equipped class rooms, library with over 4,000 books specializing in psychology, counseling, mental health, school counseling, spirituality and education. Fr. Shine MatheckalI, Deacon Gino Vengooran, Bro. Sijo Thekkinkattu and our American beneficiaries were very helpful to make this dream project come into exist.

On September 16, 2012 Jyothidarsana started its school counseling course first batch in new campus.
Rev. Dr. Jose Mappilamattel, CMI was born on July 23, 1954, at Anicadu, Muvattupuzha. Having completed his high school education, he entered the CMI (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate) Congregation and was ordained priest on May 8, 1985 and started his priestly ministry.
On November 28, 1993 Dr. Jose opened the Jyothidarsana Counseling center at Thodupuzha, Kerala, India. After working 3 years as counselor at the Center, in 1997 he moved to USA for higher studies. He joined Marist College, Poughkeepsie, one of the prestigious colleges in upstate New York, and obtained his Masters Degree in Psychology with a specialization in Counseling in the year 2000. He earned his PhD in Psychology from Southern California University for Professional Studies in 2005.
Dr. Jose also did a 2 year Post Graduate Program in Family, Child and Marital Therapy at St. John’s University, New York. He worked as Substance Abuse Counselor and Hospital Chaplain at St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Port Jefferson, NY and counselor at Be Well Counseling Center, Miller Place, NY.
He was the Director, counselor and therapist of Jyothidarsana for 7 years and presently continue his pastoral ministry at New York.
